“Hey!” he panted imploringly, racing with hammering footbeats after his terrorized wife who had fled down the alleyway as if pursued by the demon of his fright that had followed his flare-up into anger at her when his discovery of the wet bathroom walls had caused him to shout out at her, accusing her of taking hot showers and then failing to air the bathroom, accusing instead of stopping to realize that he had got home before her and that the bathroom was not steamy hot but so coldly wet that it froze him clear through to the bone when he walked in and closed the door after him to erupt in fighting anger and seek her out in the kitchen and make his petulant accusation that brought a nervous cry from her while she followed him to the bathroom just in time for them both to see the wetness ooze down off the walls, collect on the floor, attain shape and reach out preemptorily toward them, burning their ankles with deeply etched craters so that in their panic they fled the house, screaming, terrified and running as if the inundation of the world were pursuing them from the small, square cell of their bathroom out into the hot sunshine of the late July afternoon where it retained its shape and mobility and sent the glittering shards of their shrieking cries for help reverberating against the brick walls of the alley into which they had turned—that dead-end alley whose blank brick wall faced them now as he screeched imploringly to his wife who hysterically climbed up the sheer, red escarpment, “Wait!”
